Mission

According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), people in a mental health crisis “are more likely to encounter police than get medical help. As a result, 2 million people with mental illness are booked into jails each year. Nearly 15% of men and 30% of women booked into jails have a serious mental health condition.” (Source:NAMI)

Dr. Shanda Angioli started San Diego Forensic Psychology Corporation to help those incarcerated with mental illnesses by providing psychological services to assist their attorneys and/or the courts in ensuring that the defendants’ mental illnesses are taken into consideration throughout the legal process.

Although the majority of cases that San Diego Forensic Psychology Corporation deals with are in the criminal justice system, Dr. Angioli also works in the civil legal system as well. San Diego Forensic Psychology Corporation offers a variety of services, including psychological evaluations, consulting, and expert witness testimony for both civil and criminal trials. Although based in San Diego, Dr. Angioli offers services throughout California.

Forensic Psychology

What is forensic psychology?

Forensic psychology is the interaction between the practice of psychology and the law. Psychologists working in this area often interface with jails, prisons, attorneys, law enforcement, and the courts. One of the most frequent duties of forensic psychologists is conducting psychological evaluations of individuals who are involved with the legal system.

What is a forensic evaluation/assessment?

A forensic evaluation/assessment is conducted when a psychologist is hired to answer a specific legal question (i.e. insanity, competency, future risk for violence, etc.). A psychologist can be hired by attorneys and/or the court to answer these questions. The primary goal of a forensic assessment involves providing explanations for past and present behavior as well as making predictions about the parameters of future behavior. The assessment typically includes a clinical interview with the person involved in the legal case, administering psychological tests, reviewing records (i.e. medical, psychological, criminal, etc.), and possible collateral interviews (e.g. with witnesses, family, friends, attorneys, police officers, etc.). The psychologist then takes all of the information gathered and forms an opinion to answer the legal question.

Types of forensic evaluations/assessments:

  • Assess offenders’ state of mind at time of offense (i.e. insanity)

  • Assess competency of individuals to stand trial

  • Assess risk for re-offending

  • Evaluate child custody in divorce

  • Sentencing (mitigation, diminished capacity, etc.)

  • Sex Offender Evaluation

  • Worker’s Compensation

  • Fitness for Duty

  • Emotional injury (civil cases)

  • Malingering
